If you've ever read C.S. Forester's Hornblower series, then you'll know how fond he was of the card game whist. This is the card game that was the ancestor of trick-taking card games like Contract Bridge and Euchre. It's a four player (two partnerships) game with rules that are simple to learn, but the strategies can take a lifetime to master.
