We'll add a pin to the back so you can secure your flower(s) on your costume, bag, hat, or wherever you want! Learn the art of faux flowers from ribbon or embossed aluminum. Due to sharp materials, ages 12+, please. Supervised under 15. Use any tools you need, $5 per brooch material reimbursement fee.

Beading Workshop

I'd like to do a peyote beading workshop with cabochons, the cabochons will be themed for Oz. It covers how to choose foundation fabrics, how to sew beads onto the foundation, peyote beading with #11 and #15 beads to attach the cabochons to the foundation. I will have kits for $15 that will include enough supplies needed to make two cabochon projects and written instructions. I can collect funds at the start of the workshop. I also have a large bag of beads to give away for free. Past beading workshops have been popular. Young fans are welcome, although those under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. No prior beading experience required, although if you can thread a needle and sew a little, that's helpful.

Crazy Quilting 101 or Make a piece of the Patchwork Girl ($10)

Dr. Pipt and Margolotte. made "Scraps", "the Patchwork Girl" from an old crazy quilt they had stored in a trunk. In our class we will explain a little bit about the history of crazy quilting, how to piece together your fabrics, and how to do 4 or 5 common embroidery stitches used in crazy quilting. You should leave the class with a 6" embroidery hoop containing pieced fabrics and, hopefully, a few embroidery stitches. All tools required will be available in class. The kit fee, which includes a hoop, an instruction booklet and all required materials, will be $10. Children under 12 should be accompanied by a parent as we will be using sharp pointy things. Class size is limited to 24 participants.

In honor of Glinda the good witch of the movies, build yourself a primarily pink cockade with a special Teslacon Oz button center. Often seen on hats, jackets, shirts & more, cockades are snazzy accessories suitable for the most fanciful steampunk ensemble. They will go nicely with whatever you’re wearing. This workshop is perfect for those with some hand sewing experience, this fun hands-on session will introduce you to ribbon cockade-making techniques. Follow the demonstrated steps to create your own wearable pin. Ages 13+ are welcome to participate.

Make and Take: Hand Dyed Lace Flower Pin/Clip $15

Join Jenn Dunigan of Archimedes Azure Creations to learn how she hand dyes vintage to modern lace, taking anything from scraps to several bolts of different shades, and uses several different Rit Dye techniques to achieve a full rainbow of colors. She will show you how to gather and hand stitch the lace down onto a base to create a gathered simple flower shape, and let you pick out your own button, bauble, or upcycled bit as a center. As a finishing touch, we will make your flower into a clip or pin. All materials will be provided with the class fee. Requires sewing with a sharp needle, and using a hot glue gun, so not recommended for under age 12, 13-15 accepted with adult supervision.

Make Your Own Patchwork of Oz Passport $10

Back by popular demand is a make-your-own junk journal workshop! Just as Scraps the Patchwork Girl was stitched together from salvaged bits of cloth and brimming with unexpected magic, your junk journal will start with boring lunch bags and come to life from a vast collection of patterned papers and found ephemera — all yours to dig through, tear into, and make your own. Every attendee leaves with their own scissors and glue stick to keep, so the creating doesn't stop when class does. Tuck in an exhibitor’s business card, jot down new friends’ contact info, sketch next year's costume dreams, and press in ephemera and mementos you collect throughout Teslacon. You'll get a ring to hang your book from your costume or bag, so it’s a great place to keep your Teslacon ticket handy, too! Kid-friendly. Please accompany your under-12 kids. $10 materials fee reimburses me for the kits, materials, and tools. Please pay in ADVANCE, upon registering, so I can get your kit ready.
