The Near East in the Victorian Era

During the Age of Empire, the peoples of the Near East are mostly just presented as foes to Victorian France and Britain. This panel will discuss how people of North America and Central Asia viewed the events of colonialism and it impacted the rise of ideas of nation states. and traditional Islamic views. It will also focus on the Ottoman Empire, as it was an important Empire in the Near East that is mostly treated as the “Old Man of Europe.” This will panel will also deal with how the colonial wars eventually evolved into the Great War, and how it helped to shape the modern Near East.
